Many young people may find the Nordic cooperation a rather distant matter. Their experience of the Nordic countries may be limited to a visit to a twin city, organised by the local authorities. The first idea that the concept of Nordic cooperation brings to their minds is probably contacts between governments, parliamentarians or companies. However, Nordic cooperation takes place also at the local level in the context of such organisations in different parts of the Nordic countries as the Norden Association (Pohjola-Norden) and its affiliate organisations. The Youth League of the Norden Association has an active board, which together with the league members prepares programmes that interest young people. They organise, for example, trips and seminars where the Nordic youth can meet each other.
The Nordic Youth Council (NYC) is a forum for young Nordic politicians. It convenes once a year in conjunction with the Nordic Council's annual session. In the NYC sessions, young politicians debate actively and express their views on various issues and adopt resolutions. In 2006, they discussed, for example, the rights of homosexuals, the freedom of expression and the permissibility of whaling. Young politicians also meet in meetings arranged by their political umbrella organisations.
We want to show that there are channels through which you can take part in the Nordic cooperation. On this page, we have collected a few friendly and useful links to websites for you to visit and find the information that you are looking for.
These pages also offer user-oriented information about the Finnish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers. The material has been chosen with the needs and interests of the youth in mind. Since we hope that you will learn to know more about the Nordic countries and the Nordic cooperation, we have asked a few young persons from the Nordic countries to share their experiences with you. You will find the interviews under the title "Young people's voice".
In the calendar, you will also find events for young people. If you want to know what is on at a given time, please follow the calendar. Furthermore, if you happen to find something that interests you, don't hesitate to contact the organisers and ask if you can join. We also encourage you to take part in the Norden Trivia and the picture contest. Great prizes can be won. You can access the Norden Trivia and the picture contest from the front page.
